This post-1873 U.S. Army General Service button is struck in brass and displays the eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows that remained the standard insignia of enlisted men’s coats during the Indian War era. The reverse is clearly marked HORSTMANN PHILAD with star separator, a backmark associated with production after the 1873 fatigue blouse was introduced. The button retains its shank and shows period use consistent with late nineteenth-century service.
