This c.1880s gilt brass button features the intertwined GAR monogram of the Grand Army of the Republic, the post–Civil War organization of Union veterans. The button is a two-piece construction with a gilt brass front and tinned iron back showing a ring of raised stars around the loop shank, a design often used by the Waterbury Button Co. of Connecticut. The surface retains much of its original gilt and sharp detail.
