Original 1950s U.S. National Defense Service Medal awarded for honorable active duty during designated national emergency periods beginning in 1953. Designed by Thomas Hudson Jones of the U.S. Army Institute of Heraldry, the bronze medal features an American bald eagle above a bundle of arrows and olive branch with the inscription “National Defense.” The reverse displays the U.S. shield with laurel wreath. The red and yellow ribbon retains its original brooch mount and measures approximately 3 inches tall by 1.5 inches wide.
