Phranc, born Susan Gottlieb in 1957, is an American singer, songwriter, and visual artist known for her unique presence in the punk rock and folk music scenes. Embracing a distinctive androgynous appearance, Phranc gained attention for her buzz-cut hair and tailored suits, challenging gender norms. She started her career in the punk band Nervous Gender in the late 1970s but eventually transitioned to a solo career as a folk singer. Often referred to as the “All-American Jewish Lesbian Folksinger,” Phranc combines humor, social commentary, and personal storytelling in her music. Her album “Folksinger” (1985) showcases her acoustic talents and witty lyricism. Beyond music, Phranc is also recognized for her visual art, contributing to the cultural landscape as a multifaceted artist and an influential figure in LGBTQ+ and punk communities.
