Description

Original 1879 handwritten letter from Llewelin Emery of Bangor, Maine to E. P. Treat. Emery discusses delays in publishing an article and the pending sale of a local establishment. Edwin P. Treat was a prominent figure in Frankfort, Maine, involved in shipping, general store management, and other businesses. Penobscot Marine Museum says his business, E.P. Treat & Co., had a diverse range of activities, including assembling cargoes of lumber and hay, manufacturing barrel staves, and managing rental properties. Mystic Seaport Museum says he was also involved in the transportation of goods, with records indicating his involvement in shipping to Boston, Prince Edward Island, and the West Indies. The letter offers insight into 19th-century Bangor business history. It is approximately 8″ tall by 5″ wide with writing on both sides.

Bangor Mar 26, 1879
Friend E. P. Treat

You must excuse me for not attending to the publishing of the article you spoke of as I have been kept in perfect hot water ever since I took up letters of advice about the establishment. So that I have had no chance to talk with Mann about publishing it. But as soon as I can get things in shape I will try and have it published. I can wish at the time I saw your letter we were having some lively discussions about the sale of the establishment & have not thought of it till today so I write to let you know how it was. Have not got the sale completed yet but are hoping to in a day or two. It is slow work.

Yours with respect,
Llewelin Emery
