This c.1880s letter was written and signed by J. E. Nugent, co-manager of Nugent & Gleason’s Metropolitans, on printed Elmwood House stationery from Malone, New York. Nugent wrote to an associate identified only as “Mr. S.” to report, “Opened here last night to a boomer – work her up – J. E. Nugent.” The note refers to the troupe’s successful opening performance in Malone, providing a vivid glimpse into the management and excitement of a traveling theatrical company on tour in small-town America.
