Description
This original 1956 Finnish military presentation photo album was created as a New Year’s gift to U.S. Army Colonel Richard W. Mabee, who served as the American Military Attaché to Finland in the 1950s. The album was compiled and signed by Uolevi Poppius, then Inspector of Artillery at the Finnish Defense Command, documenting national artillery exercises held during the summer of 1955 at the Rovajärvi range—the largest artillery training area in Europe. Colonel Mabee can be seen in the bottom right image of the 10th photo and Uolevi Poppius can be seen in the middle image of the second row in the 11th photo. The album features 28 pages and 59 original mounted photographs depicting artillery operations, camp life, competitions, and visiting officers. All captions are meticulously hand-lettered in English, with the front page dedicated personally to Colonel Mabee and signed by Poppius. The custom binding features Finland’s heraldic lion emblem in gold on a red and black cover. This historic album came directly from Colonel Mabee’s estate and provides a unique visual record of postwar U.S.–Finnish military cooperation and Cold War–era field exercises.
