UB40, a British reggae and pop band, formed in Birmingham in 1978. The band’s name is derived from the Unemployment Benefit, Form 40, which was used by individuals in the UK to claim unemployment benefits. UB40 achieved international success with their reggae-influenced covers and original songs, blending elements of reggae, pop, and dub. Their breakthrough came with their debut album “Signing Off” in 1980, featuring hits like “Food for Thought” and “King.” Subsequent albums, including “Labour of Love” (1983), solidified their reputation with chart-topping covers of reggae classics. UB40’s lineup has undergone changes over the years, but the core members Ali Campbell, Astro, and Mickey Virtue played pivotal roles in shaping the band’s distinctive sound.
