1860 Abraham Lincoln-Hannibal Hamlin Civil War Election Campaign Cover Envelope

The presidential election of 1860 was a pivotal moment in American history, marked by intense political polarization and the looming specter of civil war. Abraham Lincoln, representing the newly formed Republican Party, faced off against Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, and Constitutional Union candidate John Bell. Lincoln’s running mate, Hannibal Hamlin, brought additional support from the northeastern states. The election showcased deep divisions over issues such as slavery and states’ rights, with Lincoln ultimately emerging victorious, setting the stage for the secession of Southern states and the outbreak of the Civil War just months later.

This lot is an antique envelope/cover created as part of the presidential election campaign of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin in 1860. The envelope/cover shows a beardless Lincoln in the corner with scenes of cutting trees and a riverboat. The back of the envelope/cover has the publication information. It reads:

“Entered according to Act of Congress, by J. A. Howells, in the year 1860, in the Clerk’s Office of the District Court of the United States, for the Northern District of Ohio. Published by J. A. Howells, Dealer in Fancy Envelopes, Jefferson, Ashtabula Co. Ohio.”

The envelope/cover is light beige and is approximately 3 1/4″ tall by 5 3/8″ wide. The envelope/cover is unposted.
