Description
“Played by a Military Band” is piece of sheet music composed by Halsey Mohr with words by Ballard MacDonald. The piece celebrates the heart-pounding sound of a military band marching down the street. The song was first introduced in Ned Wayburn’s Big Revue.
“Ned Wayburn’s Big Revue” was a popular Broadway musical revue that premiered in 1920. It was produced by Ned Wayburn, a renowned American dance instructor and choreographer, and featured music and lyrics by various composers and lyricists, including Irving Berlin and Harry Carroll. The show was known for its elaborate and innovative dance routines, which were choreographed by Wayburn himself. It featured a large ensemble cast of singers, dancers, and comedians, and was structured as a series of loosely connected sketches and musical numbers. One of the most memorable parts of the show was a ballet sequence called “The Rainbow Dance,” which featured a chorus line of female dancers dressed in rainbow-colored costumes. The revue was a commercial and critical success, and helped to establish Wayburn’s reputation as a master of dance and musical theater.
Ballard MacDonald was an American songwriter, born on November 15, 1882, in Portland, Oregon, and passed away on November 17, 1935, in Beverly Hills, California. He was a prolific lyricist who wrote the words for over 600 songs during his career. Some of his most famous compositions include “Carolina in the Morning,” “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows,” and “In My Merry Oldsmobile.” MacDonald collaborated with many well-known composers of his time, including Harry Carroll, James F. Hanley, and Harry Warren. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
