Original 1923 convention badge from the Michigan Building and Loan Association League held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on October 3–4, 1923. The badge consists of a gilt brass name bar depicting a raised view of the Grand Rapids skyline and labeled “Chris. Schlenker,” suspended from a blue silk ribbon with gilt lettering. The back retains its original Whitehead & Hoag Co. maker’s label, listing the company’s Newark, New Jersey address and union affiliations. Whitehead & Hoag was the leading American manufacturer of badges and ribbons during the early 20th century, supplying fraternal, civic, and trade organizations nationwide. This example represents the professional gatherings of Michigan’s early building and loan associations, precursors to modern savings and loan institutions.
