Prev Next

Larry Doby, born on December 13, 1923, in Camden, South Carolina, was a professional baseball player who broke barriers as the second African American player to compete in Major League Baseball (MLB), following Jackie Robinson. Doby made his debut with the Cleveland Indians on July 5, 1947, just a few months after Robinson’s historic debut. Doby’s integration into the MLB was significant, as he faced immense racism and adversity, but his talent and perseverance prevailed. Doby was a skilled outfielder and powerful hitter, known for his smooth swing and ability to hit for both average and power. He played a crucial role in the success of the Cleveland Indians, helping them win the World Series in 1948. Doby was a seven-time All-Star and consistently ranked among the league leaders in home runs and RBIs.
