Bill Rigney was an American professional baseball player, coach, and manager who had a close relationship with Willie Mays during their time together with the San Francisco Giants. Rigney managed the Giants from 1956 to 1960, which was the prime of Mays’ career, and he helped Mays develop into one of the greatest players in the history of the game. Rigney and Mays had a strong bond both on and off the field, and Rigney was known for his ability to communicate with Mays and get the most out of his talents. Under Rigney’s leadership, Mays won two National League Most Valuable Player Awards and helped lead the Giants to the World Series in 1962. Even after Rigney left the Giants, he remained close with Mays and continued to offer him advice and support throughout his career.
