Willie McCovey was a professional baseball player who spent most of his career as a first baseman for the San Francisco Giants. He was born on January 10, 1938, in Mobile, Alabama, and passed away on October 31, 2018, in Stanford, California. McCovey was known for his powerful left-handed swing, which earned him the nickname “Stretch.” He played in the major leagues for 22 seasons, debuting with the Giants in 1959 and retiring in 1980 after a short stint with the Oakland Athletics. Over the course of his career, he hit 521 home runs, had a batting average of .270, and was named to the All-Star team six times. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986.
