This lot is a cancelled pay warrant from the city of Charleston, South Carolina authorizing a $5.00 payment to the College of Charleston for salary. The back of the check is endorsed and signed by James Harold Easterby.

ames Harold Easterby (1898–1960) was a notable historian, educator, and editor from South Carolina. He is best remembered for his work in documenting the state’s history, including editing the significant volume The South Carolina Rice Plantation as Revealed in the Papers of Robert F.W. Allston. Easterby was deeply involved in the academic and cultural life of Charleston, particularly through his association with the College of Charleston, where he contributed as a faculty member. In 1949, he became the director of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History where he worked extensively to organize, catalog, and preserve the state’s historical records.

The pay warrant is approximately 3″ tall by 8.25″ wide.
