In the last half of the 1800s, the touring and performing schedules of most traveling shows and entertainers were maintained by Lyceum Bureaus who represented groups of performers, lecturers, musicians, etc. The Midland Lyceum Bureaus based in Des Moines, Iowa played a key role in organizing educational and entertainment events across the Midwest, including lectures, concerts, and theatrical performances. This lot is a group of three letters written from A. D. Snyder, president of the Midland Lyceum Bureau, to Henry S. Grinde in Sheyenne, North Dakota. The first letter dated October 30, 1918 and the last letter dated November 26, 1918 discuss details concerning upcoming lectures and performances. The middle letter dated November 11, 1918 is interesting because it is a general communication about the effects of the influenza epidemic (Spanish Flu) on performance schedules. The Spanish Flu was one of the deadliest pandemics in history.
All three typed letters are on Midland Lyceum Bureau engraved letterhead and are signed by A. D. Snyder. They are approximately 11″ tall by 8.5″ wide.
