This lot is a pair of letters sent from Ernest Shipman’s Attractions to E. N. Merrill, manager of the Coburn Opera House in Skowhegan, Maine. The letters are related to performances of Shakespeare’s comedy “As You Like It” in 1903. The first letter, dated June 24, 1903, asks if contracts can be sent for an August 28th performance date. Apparently, they worked out the details, because the second letter, dated August 19, 1903, is from Ernest Shipman himself replying to a concern Mr. Merrill had about paying a pro-rata portion of mailing list expenses.
The two letters are on the same letterhead. The first has the signature of Shipman’s associate, Phillip A. Kilfoil and the second has Ernest Shipman’s signature. Both letters are approximately 7.25″ tall by 8.5″ wide.
