From the end of the 1800s through the early 1900s, most theatre and opera house managers in the United States and Canada had to book their entertainment through Syndicates which controlled the touring schedules of most traveling shows and entertainers. One of the most prominent Syndicates was run by Marc Klaw and Abraham Lincoln Erlanger in New York City. This lot is a letter written from Hugo Seaberg, manager and owner of the Garden Coliseum Theatre in Raton, New Mexico, to Klaw and Erlanger indicating that he was once again taking control of the theatre. The typed letter is signed by Seaberg or his assistant. The letter is on Seaberg’s law office stationary. The letter is especially interesting because it was written just about one year prior to total destruction of the Garden Coliseum Theatre by fire in 1911.
Hugo Seaberg moved to Raton, New Mexico in 1903 where he had opened a law office. He was largely involved in commercial enterprises such as the Mills-Seaberg Company, the Seaberg-Crampton Company, Seaberg & Taylor, the Seaberg Hotel Company, and the Coliseum Garden Theatre in Raton. During his career he served as U.S. Commissioner in northern New Mexico, president of the New Mexico Reform School at Springer for four years, and was an attorney for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. In 1937 the Seaberg Hotel went bankrupt. That next year Seaberg and his wife moved to Trinidad, Colorado where he died on August 6, 1945.
