This lot is a 1914 letter from Frederick A. Mills, well-known composer of music in many styles including ragtime and cakewalk, to Lawrence T. Berliner, well-known show promoter and agent. The letter is approximately 11″ tall and 8.5″ wide.
Frederick A. Mills founded a company, “F. A. Mills”, which was a leading producer of sheet music in the first quarter of the 20th century. However, Mills’ name has even more interest. Prior to starting the music company, Mills was already a well-known composer (under the name “Kerry Mills”) and is regarded as the person who added coherent style to the cakewalk genre. In the letter, Mills asks Berliner to send him information about the stage theatres, moving picture theatres, cabarets, and orchestra and band leaders in his city.
L. T. Berliner was a prominent figure in the vaudeville and theatrical community during the early 20th century. He was known for his work as a manager and promoter of various theatrical acts and performances. Berliner played a significant role in organizing and promoting vaudeville shows, contributing to the vibrant entertainment scene of the time.
The letter is typed on F. A. Mills Incorporated letterhead and hand-signed by F. A. Mills.
