1826 U.S. House and Senate 19th Congress Invasion of Louisiana Reimbursements

This lot is a group of 5 pages from March-May of 1826 in the 19th Congressional Session. The pages, which cover both House of Representatives and Senate issues, were removed from a book recording government proceedings and are approximately 8.75″ tall by 5.75″ wide. The documents include resolutions for various complaints brought before the two congressional bodies, most notably, reimbursements for losses suffered during the British invasion of Louisiana in 1814-15. The group includes the following:

  • April 21, 1826 – A report by Rep. Robert L. Owen (Democrat, Alabama) recommending the rejection of the requests by Bailey & Rinker from Louisiana for $30,130 in losses sustained during the invasion (1 page)
  • April 21, 1826 – A report of a letter from U.S. Army Brigadier General H. Atkinson submitted by Sen. Thomas Hart Benton (Democrat, Missouri) which confirmed that he took land in St. Louis for military purposes but it was no longer needed (1 page)
  • April 25, 1826 – A report by Rep. Theodore Dwight (Federalist, New York) requesting the creation of a bill to repay shipping duties charged to Hamburg ships as requested by C. N. Buck, Consul General of the United States at Hamburg (2 pages)
  • May 5 1826 – A report by Robert L. Owen (Democrat, Alabama) submitting a claim and evidence for reimbursement to Francis Larche for the use of his cart to transport supplies from New Orleans during the invasion of Louisiana in 1814-15 (1 page)
